We care about the future of this planet and healing the rift between cultures generated by our colonial past. We care about the people we work with, their community, and their environment.
What makes (Australian) Aboriginal knowledge so particularly special is that they are the longest living culture on the planet. Indigenous Australians have adapted to extreme climate events, including oceans rising and falling, droughts and floods. They developed strategies to adapt to the changes in climate that were sustainable for their living, and intrinsically sustainable for the environment, from thousands of years of living integrated to their natural landscapes. Coastal Connections believes that these strategies can be seen as a blueprint for our sustainable survival on this planet. The richness of Indigenous knowledge has the potential to improve and create new strategies for society, as a whole, to adapt to changes in climate.
Coastal Connections brings its passion, technical training and scientific knowledge in coastal oceanography to the table, which is why we offer work is in this field. We are passionate about the role that the coasts and oceans play in the changing climate, and in the protection it offers humanity. We are motivated by how humans can live in better connection with their environment, and we believe that re-establishing the connection western society lost with the environment is key to healthy and sustainable living. We view Indigenous Australians as offering key knowledge for the future and leading the way for Australia's coastal and marine sustainability. We aim to offer work that supports Indigenous Peoples’ sovereignty, leadership, and wellbeing.
"We are passionate about supporting Indigenous communities in achieving their goals to protect their culture and our environments for future generations. Our approach actively seeks out connections between western science and Indigenous knowledge and we assist in bringing them together as complementary synergies. We provide a collaborative working space that is respectful, welcoming and effective for alchemising ideas, methods and solutions. If this resonates with you, we would like to hear from you."
